Algerian authorities have launched an e-mail system to benefit individuals sentenced to three years imprisonment or less.
This electronic surveillance lets offenders adapt their penalty, allowing them to pursue work, school, etc., while giving their whereabouts to their judges through an electronic bracelet.
The system is a result of the Law on the Organization of Prisons and Social Reintegration of Detainees. It allows the judge to “apply the sanctions automatically or at the request of the convicted directly or through his lawyer, in the event of a conviction penalty of deprivation of liberty not exceeding three years, or in the case of whether the remaining punishment of the convicted does not exceed this period.”
This procedure requires the consent of the offender or if a minor, his or her legal representative, the judge’s geographical and time specifications, a permanent address, and the lack of damage to the bracelet.
