On Oct. 14, Director-General of the National Archives of Algeria Abdel-Majid Shekhi pleaded with Algiers to unify the work of the Algerian and international institutions so that cinematographic heritage could be continued.

A speech was given at the opening ceremonies of the International Symposium on “Memory of Films: Preserving Cinematographic Heritage” at the National Library. The event was organized by the Ministry of Culture with the European Union’s program on cultural heritage.

The director-general said he was sad that many film institutions work by themselves and said that they have rarely, if ever worked with the Museum of Algerian Cinema or the Center National Center for Cinema and Audiovisual.

The National Archives, according to Shekhi, should be treated as “pot of works on memory.”

He asked that the director-general of the National Archives figure out how to improve the situation.
