Somaca recently issued the following announcement.
Renault DP World F1 Team completed a sensational British Pirelli Grand Prix with fourth place for Daniel Ricciardo and sixth place for Esteban Ocon after an exciting final at Silverstone.
As the end of the race approached, the team was preparing to collect good points since Daniel and Esteban were respectively sixth and eighth. Debris on the track in the second sector, however, caused punctures for Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz which our two pilots exploited to move up the hierarchy. Daniel also took advantage of his overtaking Lando Norris shortly before the incidents to finish just 1''1 off the podium.
Fourth at the finish line, Daniel equals his best result for Renault and his performance at the 2019 Italian Grand Prix while Esteban signs his best performance in Formula 1 since the 2018 Italian Grand Prix.
After a lightning start from eighth place, Daniel gained two positions to move up to sixth place. Esteban also had an excellent take-off, leveling up to Daniel in the first two corners before settling in ninth place.
After a first safety car, the two drivers remained on the track with soft tires until the second neutralization on the twelfth lap. The team then took the opportunity to make two saves in quick succession, Daniel putting on the hard tires first before Esteban immediately did the same while losing a minimum of time thanks to the responsiveness and efficiency of the pit team.
The brawl in the peloton raged between fifth and tenth throughout the race, with Daniel and Esteban showing a solid pace to score more points.
Esteban managed to snatch eighth place from Lance Stroll before Bottas and Sainz suffered punctures while Daniel plunged under braking to snatch fourth place from Norris.
Daniel Ricciardo - Start: 8 th - To: 4 th
It was a bit crazy at the end and it's really nice to come away with fourth place. We got off to a good start to move up to sixth and put in a good pace. On the restart, I was close to Carlos [Sainz], but not close enough and that opened the door for Lando [Norris]. It was a little frustrating, but we finally got back to them. The race was really lively and it was really fun. We had a little more pace in the last laps and I was able to catch Lando before Carlos had a problem. I got closer to Charles [Leclerc] and maybe we could have aimed for a podium with a few more loops! We will have another chance next week. We were helped a bit by the chaos, but we were clearly in the top six cars today and it's fun.
Esteban Ocon - Departure: 9 th - Arrival: 6 th
I am very happy with the result of the team. It was a lot of fun on the track with a lot of overtaking, some great battles and a fantastic result to finish. I think today we showed how fast our car is in the race. It was really great and it was a big performance for the team. This is due to the hard work of everyone at Enstone and Viry between Budapest and Silverstone. We talked a lot and it all really paid off this afternoon. It also shows that we need to qualify even better to make our Sunday life easier. We will again have the opportunity to pick up more next week.
Cyril Abiteboul, Team Principal
It's a very good result from a team perspective and one of our best since returning to F1. It's especially good to get it at Silverstone, a temple to the Formula 1 World Championship and one of the team's home races. We clearly had a bit of help at the end to gain places, but that shouldn't take away from the team's excellent performance throughout the weekend. We had a good practice on Friday and it prepared us well for qualifying where both cars entered the top ten while allowing us to learn how to make hard tires last in the race. Today, the two pilots achieved an excellent first lap to have a good track position, then we decided to put on the hard tires on both cars under the safety car, where the pit crew did a great job. We also had excellent reliability, which is always important when races are as hectic as this one. After circuits where the car was in difficulty, the track of Silverstone confirms the strengths and weaknesses of our car. In particular, we must continue to work on the fast corners as this is our weak point compared to our direct rivals. We have made progress, but we must not lose sight of our direct competitors and Mercedes' level of competitiveness under all circumstances. always important when the races are as hectic as this one.
