The Spanish Senate has given authorization for Mariano Rajoy's government to place Catalonia under guardianship, which will include the dismissal of some leaders of the independence movement.
The authorization was based on Article 155 of the Constitution and was approved with 214 votes in favor, 47 in opposition and one abstaining.
The parliament of Catalonia had just prior to the ruling of the senate adopted a new resolution in which they declared their independence as a republic, to which the Spanish Prime Minister said would require a restoration of legality in Catalonia.
The resolution had 70 votes in favor, 10 against and two abstaining.
Thousands of individuals celebrated outside of the parliament about the new resolution.
